Lula and I got back to Hamburg from Dubai last night, having spent over a week there providing pastoral and logistical support for the lady in the local hospital, as reported last week. But there remained one problem; every Monday night from 7:00 to 9:30 PM Latvian time I teach a “Luther Academy” class over Zoom. That equates to 9:00 to 11:30 PM Dubai time. I didn’t want to hold the class in our hotel room because that would have disturbed Lula at such a late hour. So, I needed a conference room to teach my class. Unfortunately, they were all reserved. Could I find a public spot in the hotel that would be private and with as little background noise as possible? Most of the public spaces had restaurants nearby, or the rush of man-made waterfalls, or elevator music, or simply the chatter of perambulating hotel patrons. Fortunately, there was an excellent WiFi signal all around the facility. On Sunday Lula and I discovered a backwater hallway, even with a raised cabinet serviceable as a standing desk and—most importantly—an electrical outlet right there. I set up shop about 30 minutes before class, praying that the music from the sales convention of Indian underwear salesmen down the hall would not be too distracting. Fortunately, they didn’t get too crazy. All in all, that turned out to be a perfect spot to hold my class—despite the fact that at one point, about 45 minutes before the end of the session, hotel management turned off the ceiling lights.
